To balance the manic goofiness of Chevy Chase in the classic NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION, the gorgeous Beverly D’Angelo was cast as his wife. The fact that the actress was able to hold her own comedically was all the better. So, for the reboot starring Ed Helms as an adult Rusty Griswold, a strong comedic actress was needed to play the matriarch.

Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein hit gold by casting Christina Applegate as Rusty’s wife. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Applegate will be playing the role of a spouse who may be losing interest in Rusty. Therefore, the family embarks on a road trip to try and reclaim their relationship.

No word on whether Chevy Chase or Beverly D’Angelo will return to their original roles, which would make them the grandparents in this movie, but I would love to see it. Ed Helms has a lot of the same characteristics as Chevy Chase and could pull this off. Applegate is still hot and has proven she can play with the boys from her roles in ANCHORMAN and HALL PASS. I hope this project continues to come together.
