Christopher Smith working on modern film noir Detour

For my money, British filmmaker Chris Smith – the man behind SEVERANCE, CREEP, TRIANGLE and most recently BLACK DEATH – is one of the best independent filmmakers out there today. His output is consistently impressive. If you’re not familiar with his work, you’re missing out.

Smith recently spoke to Screen Daily about his next project, DETOUR, which he calls “a modern re-spin on the film-noir genre with a structural shake up.” The thriller centers around a roadtrip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Smith adds, “It’s about how one decision can carve two entirely separate destinies.”

Smith recently completed the second draft of the script, with an eye on filming in Canada. The picture has already received UK Film Council development funding, and it will be represented at the European Producers Co-Production Forum to seek international investors.

Julie Baines, who is co-producing with Jason Newmark for Dan Films, said, “Having worked with Chris on several films, I am expecting this to be good.” That makes two of us.
