Unlike several of his '80s brethren, Chucky has managed to keep trucking along over the decades, proving that he may very well end up being our friend to the end. Don Mancini, who has written every installment of the series in addition to directing the last three, seems more than happy to keep the CHILD'S PLAY series going for as long as possible, and the next addition to the franchise may very well play out on the small-screen.
While speaking with Bloody Disgusting, Mancini revealed that he and franchise producer David Kirschner are currently developing a CHILD'S PLAY TV series. Unlike other movie franchises which have made the leap to television, this one won't be a reboot, but rather a continuation of the story which has been developing over the course of seven movies. Don Mancini told BD that the series was "deliberately set up at end of the last movie," adding that the tone will be more "dark and disturbing" than previous entries. I like the sound of that. "We plan to use Child’s Play in the title," Mancini said. "We want to definitely signal that we are going dark, darker than ever before. It’s going to be very creepy." Also returning for the TV series will be Brad Dourif, who will lend his distinctive cackle to the voice of Chucky once again. The show is being envisioned as an hour-long series consisting of eight episodes, which will provide quite the opportunity for lots of bloody Chucky-related mayhem. We'll get into some SPOILERS for the recent CULT OF CHUCKY below, so be warned.
The last film in the franchise, CULT OF CHUCKY, revealed that Chucky had been able to split his soul into several bodies, which means that there are more than a few Chucky's wandering around. Chucky also finally managed to transfer his soul into a human body when he took over Nica (Fiona Dourif) and escaped the Harrogate Psychiatric Hospital with the help of Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly), as well as the Tiffany doll. There could potentially be more than a handful of possessed Chucky dolls (dozens? hundreds?) out there, which could provide the opportunity for a variety of different stories across the globe, all while following the murderous road-trip of Nica/Chucky and Tiffany.
