Clockwork will survive the Warner Bros merger and move to Skydance

Deadline reports that Clockwork, the contemporary film label announced by Warner Bros. earlier this year, will survive the merger with Paramount. It will make the leap to the newly merged Paramount-Warner Bros. company, which is now known as Skydance. I know, why wouldn’t it? It was part of Warner Bros., and Paramount has bought the entire studio. But apparently it wasn’t a given that Clockwork would survive.

Clockwork Moves to Skydance

Warner Bro. Motion Picture heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy (who will be exiting Warner Bros. after the merger closes) launched the label with former Neon Chief Marketing Officer Christian Parkes, aiming to focus on lower-budget films, either acquired or made in-house. They would also be tasked with restoring classic films in the Warner Bros. library.

However, there had been talk that Paramount might scrap the label before it really had a chance. Other rumours claimed De Luca and Abdy were actually hoping for that outcome, so they could take the label independent and run it themselves.

But it seems Skydance will be keeping it, with Deadline’s report saying the company views Clockwork as a “blooming rose.” I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that the label will help Skydance reach its goal of releasing at least 30 theatrical movies a year.

Clockwork’s Upcoming Releases

Clockwork’s first theatrical release will be a 4K restoration of the long-awaited director’s cut of Ken Russell’s The Devils, the historical psychological horror film which was deemed highly blasphemous upon its original debut.

The Devils takes place in 17th-century France, and follows Father Grandier (Oliver Reed), a priest whose unorthodox views on sex and religion influence a passionate following of nuns, including the sexually obsessed Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave). When the power-hungry Cardinal Richelieu (Christopher Logue) realizes he must eliminate Grandier to gain control of France, Richelieu portrays Grandier as a satanist and spearheads a public outcry to destroy the once-loved priest’s reputation. The film will be released in theaters on October 16.

Other Clockwork projects include the next movie from Anora Oscar winner Sean Baker, Ti Amo!, as well as Park Chan-Wook’s The Brigands of Rattlecreek starring Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Tang Wei. There’s also Sean Penn’s movie about the January 6th Capitol riots, Mary Bronstein‘s Nasty starring Jenna Ortega and Rose Byrne, and a new movie from Noah Baumbach.
