While I appreciated most of the theatrical moviegoing experience of CLOVERFIELD, I must admit it was one of those movies that you walk out of and immediately begin griping about. Lame characters, lame romance-subplot, not enough actual monster action, stomach-churning cinematography, etc… Perhaps its the fact that I was incredibly excited for it that led to me feeling so let down the more I thought about it, but whatever the case, it hasn’t held up whatsoever (add to that I watched some of it again on DVD and couldn’t even finish it).
All that said, I am down with a sequel. What can I say, I’m a sucker for giant monsters. The creative team behind the flick (J.J. Abrams, Drew Goddard, Matt Reeves) are clever fellows, and seeing how they must know their movie didn’t set the world on fire (who the hell even talks about it anymore?), I think they’d be inclined to improve vastly upon it… If it ever gets made, of course.
Director Matt Reeves chatted with MTV about what’s going on with the sequel, and it sure doesn’t sound like its even near pre-production. “I don’t know at this point… I think if we find something that would be incredibly fun to make and that we would want to watch then that’s what would push it over the top. It’s a weird puzzle.”
Reeves mentions that the studio “wants it to happen,” but the Bad Robot crew doesn’t even have a solid idea yet. “At times it’s gone dormant and then its come back up again… There are a couple ideas that have potential but we haven’t quite cracked it yet.” So nothing doing, BUT he adds this, which I dig: “When we were in Japan we thought, wouldn’t it be cool to do it here.”
F*ck yes it would! Ditch the handheld camera, ditch the Tommy Hilfiger models, and go for the jugular with an old-fashioned “Monster Attacks Japan” epic!
I’d also like to take a moment to tell Reeves that he should simply cancel his remake of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN immediately. The flick is on its way to becoming a modern-day horror classic; there’s no chance he tops it.
CLOVERFIELD’s Lizzy Caplan will not be returning for obvious reasons…
