It was reported a few months ago that the Clueless legacy sequel series said, “As if” to Peacock and parted ways. Now, the Clueless show is like, “Whatever!” as it rolls with the homies back to Paramount, the studio that released the original 1995 movie from Amy Heckerling and solidified Alicia Silverstone as an icon of the 90s. The show has now found a home at Paramount+ and the start of filming is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles sometime in 2027.
Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, stated, “Clueless is coming home. Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”
Paramount+ has just unveiled some exciting new details on the sequel series. Silverstone will be reprising her role as Beverly Hills socialite Cher Horowitz and serving as an executive producer on the project.
The official synopsis from Paramount reads,
“Picking up 30 years after the original film, beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.”
The rest of the cast is yet to be announced.
Heckerling, who wrote and directed the culturally impactful film, will join Silverstone as an executive producer along with Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage (The OC, Gossip Girl, Nancy Drew) via Fake Empire, Jordan Weiss (Freakier Friday, Dollface) and the original film’s producer, Robert Lawrence.
The original film was a very loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma as it followed Cher (Silverstone), a beautiful, clever and rich high school student who befriended a new student named Tai Frasier (Brittany Murphy) and decided to give her a makeover. It was ridiculously ’90s in the best way possible. The film spawned a TV series (which featured Stacey Dash reprising the role of Dionne) that ran from 1996-1999, as well as a series of novels, comics, and a stage musical.
Last Summer, Paramount Pictures’ Clueless celebrated its milestone 30th anniversary, during which members of the original cast and movie’s director reunited at a 35mm screening of the film at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The film was also recently added to the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
