I’m convinced that A24 is trying to make us all cry after releasing an official trailer for C’mon C’mon. Helmed by Mike Mills (20th Century Women, Thumbsucker), this powerful-looking slice of cinema stars Joaquin Phoenix as a radio journalist who embarks on a cross-country trip with his young nephew.

C’mon C’mon premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and will open in theaters later this year. The film is shot in black and white, which lends well to Robbie Ryan’s stunning cinematography. Early reviews have praised the film as a “soft-spoken” cinematic experience with compelling performances across the board.

Per A24, here is the official synopsis for C’mon C’mon:

Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his young nephew (Woody Norman) forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply moving story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future, from writer-director Mike Mills.

C’mon C’mon also stars Scoot McNairy, Gaby Hoffman, Jaboukie Young-White, Elaine Kagan, and Kate Adams.

I think we can all agree that C’mon C’mon presents a drastic shift in tone for Phoenix after playing Arthur Fleck for Todd Phillips’ Joker. For me, this goes to show that Phoenix is a true Hollywood chameleon. By this, I mean he’s someone that can slip into any role and often does to keep things interesting.

What did you all think about the C’mon C’mon trailer? From where I’m standing, it looks like a real tearjerker and strong bait for judges during Awards season. Will Mills’ new film bring the house down? We’ll find out later this year.
