Two weeks ago Mr. Walkuski taunted us all with thoughts of David Fincher potentially directing the American remake of Swedish thriller THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Well folks, ’tis official…Fincher will indeed take the project as his next directorial effort!
The drop comes via The Playlist, who also debunked last week’s rumors of Fincher helming the Bobby Fischer drama PAWN SACRIFICE.
Currently being adapted by the masterful Steve Zallian (SCHINDLER’S LIST, AMERICAN GANGSTER), THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is based on the first of a trio of Swedish books called “The Millennium Trilogy” by Stieg Larsson. Here’s how the first one shapes up:
Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger’s are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.
Nice! A definite return to the bleak, morbid subject matter the front end of Fincher’s filmmaking career engendered. I think I speak for us all here at AITH when I say…count me the f*ck in!
Word is, wisely so, that Fincher’s looking for a relative unknown to play the lead in the film. English actress Carey Mulligan, whose profile has steadily risen since being nominated for a Best Actress Oscar this year, was said to be on Sony’s early wish-list. Mulligan claims she’s fielded no offers for the part.
Scott Rudin will produce, continuing his gaudy run of prestige pcitures (including a Best Picutre win for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN).
