Confirmed: Sam Worthington WILL play the lead in Dracula: Year Zero!

It was only yesterday morning our man Moises alerted y’all to the fact Alex Proyas’ DRACULA: YEAR ZERO has commenced production in the land of vegemite. Makes sense then, a day later, that we get confirmation of what we’ve been led to believe for months now…Sam Worthington (seen right) will indeed play the titular bloodsucker!

Confirmation comes via Collider, who also iterated a filming start date of June 2011, not six months earlier as originally reported. Sounds pretty official, ay?!?

Written by first timers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (who are both tentatively attached to write the reboot of FLASH GORDON, set for 2012), DRACULA : YEAR ZERO is an origins tale about Vlad the Impaler and how he became so savagely notorious that Bram Stoker based the character of Dracula on him in his classic tale.

Here’s a quote Proyas offered back in January:

“Why I’m so intrigued by this story – when someone originally suggested it to me, I was like, I’m so not into this; Dracula has to be the most filmed character in the history of movies – is that this script has such an interesting and original take on this character. It’s all about how Vlad of Transylvania became this creature; the choices that he made to make him into this tragic character. It’s so intriguing to me, to approach this as a character study on a huge, epic canvas. The script is from these two young guys who have never really done a script before, but they basically did their thing and have reinvented the whole context of this most familiar personality.”

DRACULA: YEAR ZERO will commence filming in June of 2011.

Worthington’s LAST NIGHT co-star, Eva Mendes!
