Constantine 2?

IGN has an exclusive interview with producer extraordinare Lorenzo di Bonaventura about the possibility of CONSTANTINE 2 (because we’re all clamoring for it), and the man says it’s definitely a possibility. (Warning: his first sentence might cause immature giggles and chuckles)

“I know all the filmmakers want to try to make number two. We love the character. We’re hoping that we can find a way to make even, I’ll say, a darker, harder version of it. We’re not at that place yet where we really have the ability to get that done, but I know Keanu wants to play that and all of us think that there is a natural, new and darker adventure with Constantine.”

The producer is well aware that the first one didn’t exactly win over naysayers who weren’t thrilled with Constantine being portrayed by the automaton Keanu Reeves, but he’s going to stand by his creative peeps in the face of muttering fanboys.

“I never have a problem with naysayers at all. I think that everybody is entitled to feel it. But the place where it gets hard for us as filmmakers is where it cuts off an avenue of decision-making before we’ve gotten there. So that’s the place where I try to be very protective of the writers and the directors and the artists that I’m working with, because I don’t know where they’re going to end up. And until I know that, I’m going to defend them to a tee.”

Can’t say I have an opinion one way or another on CONSTANTINE 2 since the first one did absolutely nothing for me. I guess if they are to make it, “darker” is the way to go – although it was pretty f’n dark to begin with. Darkness wasn’t the issue – storytelling (and pretentious filmmaking) was.

Somethin’ tells me Mrs. Weisz will not be returning…
