You probably don’t need to be reminded that M. Night Shyamalan’s THE HAPPENING is among the funniest horror movies of all time. It’s so hilarious you still have to wonder if Shyamalan wasn’t, as the Brits say, taking the piss. How could anyone – anyone – make some of the choices Shyamalan made in that film? Either the director was simply f*cking with us, had lost his mind, or just happened to lay a gigantic turd the likes of which we hadn’t seen in a long, long time. All signs have always pointed to Option #3, but I’m still half-expecting M. Night to reveal one day that we’re all gullible dopes: “There’s the twist, it was a comedy all along!”
At this point, it seems a bit redundant to keep piling on THE HAPPENING, but what the hell, let’s kick it once more. The folks at Screen Junkies have given the 2008 eco-horror mess the “Honest Trailers” treatment, with predictably entertaining results. My favorite bit? The bit about the ‘mannequin.” I had never noticed just how ridiculous Zooey is in that scene until now.
To be reminded Shyamalan was actually pretty good at one point, check out our most recent Face-Off! Early buzz indicates THE VISIT isn’t half bad either, so fingers crossed M. Night has left this sort of silliness behind him for good.
