With the outrageous success of Marvel’s THE AVENGERS so far, it should come as little surprise that there exists a desire to see it go all the way and take the all-time top spot, which would send Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into battle with blue aliens and a big sinking ship. The superhero flick is sitting pretty in the no. 3 spot both domestically and worldwide, but Disney and Marvel may be amping up their game to change that.
Rumors are swirling that the studios are contemplating a re-release of THE AVENGERS as a director’s cut, including an additional 35 minutes of footage from the Joss Whedon extravaganza. Whedon has already said in the past that his original cut of the film was just over three hours and has discussed many of the various scenes that were taken out, including much more of Captain America’s story (and an appearance from Peggy Carter).
None of this is confirmed of course, but the question remains; Would it be enough to topple James Cameron’s reigning kings AVATAR and TITANIC? Currently, The Avengers are about $100 million away from the no. 2 spot and about $200 million away from the no. 1 spot, domestically (with about 1.5 billion to take the worldwide). Could a re-release generate $200 million bucks and make THE AVENGERS into Earth’s Mightiest Box Office?
Personally, I still intend to see THE AVENGERS at least once more before it vacates theaters and there’s absolutely no question that I’d pay to see a director’s cut in theaters…at least once. If this happens, I honestly like THE AVENGERS chances. Of course, there is still that little Batman movie coming out next month…
What do you guys think? Could THE AVENGERS do it? Would you make it happen?
THE AVENGERS is currently playing in theaters.
