Late last week, Gamespot reported that while at the inaugural MI6 game-marketing conference last week in San Francisco, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET director Wes Craven, who was there to speak on fostering customer loyalty, marketing, and creating anticipation for a product from his perspective as a film director, Craven dropped some hints that obviously caught people off guard.
After speaking at the conference, Craven spoke with San Jose Mercury News writer Dean Takahashi about his possible work as a game designer. Craven wouldn’t elaborate, but according to Takahashi’s blog, the director said he was “in talks to create an original game”. Contrary to what some of you may think, Craven actually didn’t have any input at all for the old NES adaptation of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, which was a so-so effort.
Craven isn’t the only film director to become involved in video games. Hong Kong action director John Woo is overseeing the development of Midway’s STRANGLEHOLD, Peter Jackson was hands-on with Ubisoft’s adaptation of KING KONG, Steven Spielberg is currently working with Electronic Arts to do some games, John Carpenter is working with Titan Productions on PSYCHOPATH (which Carpenter plans on turning into a movie down the road, and then there’s Clive Barker, who scored with UNDYING.
Obviously, this is one story that deserves a follow-up, whenever Craven gets around to explaining what he’s talking about.
