Here we have another genre offering involving an exotic location and strange children. This one’s called VINYAN and though I don’t have a clue as to what that means, I am liking its based-on-reality plot points. And that pic from the flick of its star Emmanuelle Béart above doesn’t hurt either. Once your through getting your ogling thrills, take a peek at the plot:
Still not having accepted the loss of their son to the 2004 Tsunami disaster, Jeanne and Paul Bellmer have remained in Thailand, hanging on the fact that his body has never been discovered and he may still be alive. Jeanne is convinced that traffickers have kidnapped him in the confusion that followed the catastrophe, so the couple bribe a mysterious “Mr. Gao” to take them on a boat ride to the pirate-infested coast on the Burmese border. What they discover is beyond their imagination, as they come across a mysterious village on a secluded island and encounter strange children.
It sounds like a stab at “serious horror” as opposed to the more common splattery ilk. And that’s totally fine with me. I have a real appreciation for genre flicks that take some true, dramatic steps. I hope writer/director Fabrice Du Welz is looking to deliver something well-crafted.
