Danny Boyle announces filming on Trainspotting 2 has begun in Scotland

It's hard to believe that TRAINSPOTTING was released 20 years ago, but that film introduced the world to some great actors in Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Johnny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremmer, and Kelly Macdonald, as well as one hell of a director in Danny Boyle (STEVE JOBS, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE). There's been talk about a TRAINSPOTTING sequel for a long time and despite Ewan McGregor's initial reluctance, it's finally happening.

Danny Boyle took to the Humans of Edinburgh Facebook page to announce the filming of TRAINSPOTTING 2. He also said a few nice words about city and its people, of which you can read below.

We're up in Scotland filming Trainspotting 2 just now. I think what I love most about what I do is the variety, and being able to do something new every day. I get to meet such amazing people all the time. I think everyone's fear is doing something a robot can do, and getting stuck doing something repetitive. I feel very fortunate and grateful to be able to make films, and to be able to always have a choice in what I do. Coming back to Edinburgh has actually been really fascinating, since filming the first Trainspotting Edinburgh has changed dramatically. You can see the gentrification massively in the city.

Irvine Welsh's follow-up novel, "Porno," followed the usual gang as they tried their hand in the world of (you guessed it) porn. I'm curious to see if Danny Boyle and writer John Hodge will stick with that story or craft something of their own design. Something tells me it will be the latter. In any case, TRAINSPOTTING 2 will be in the can in a matter of weeks, so here's hoping it lives up to the original!

TRAINSPOTTING 2 is now filming in Scotland.

One of the best openings of any movie.
