As far as high profile genre news goes, none seemed bigger this week than the return of Danny Boyle to the infected-zombie world of 28 DAYS (and WEEKS) LATER. Such a possibility was met with unanimous excitement, which makes the following briefing all the more disheartening. According to Boyle himself at a Q&A for his new film 127 HOURS (via STYD), the director admitted he would like to direct 28 MONTHS LATER, but his schedule won’t allow for it anytime soon…
Wait, what schedule…any casual observer may ask after visiting Boyle’s IMDB page. Well, his slate isn’t chalk full of film projects per se. Boyle most imminently has a stage version of FRANKENSTEIN to achieve in London next year. Then, if that isn’t daunting enough, Boyle has the tall task of conducting the opening ceremony (as art director) of the 2012 Summer Olympics, also in London.
Most likely then, Boyle’s directorial docket won’t be filled until sometime in mid-2012. Still, he doesn’t rule out coming back to a franchise he ignited…saying something to the effect that, if fans show overwhelming demand for a third entry, then it’s likely to happen eventually.
