Dante’s Hole wins Venice

Long time horror mainstay Joe Dante (THE HOWLING, GREMLINS) has returned with a vengeance to the genre that catapulted him to an A-list filmmaker. His new 3-D family-horror picture THE HOLE has just nabbed the top prize at the Venice Film Festival bestowed to the most creative 3-D feature.

Produced by Bold Films, Dante’s new film beat a host of other impressive 3-D efforts, including UP, CORALINE, and MY BLOODY VALENTINE. According to Variety, the flick was awarded for it “best representing the exploration of this new frontier of cinematic language.”

With no release date in sight, THE HOLE focuses on a family that moves to a new house with a heavily armored trapdoor in the cellar. Behind the door is said to be a portal to something if not totally sinister, certainly otherworldly. The flick stars Teri Polo, Bruce Dern (reteaming with Dante after the hilarious turn in THE ‘BURBS), Haley Bennett (below), Chris Massoglia, Nathan Gamble, Quinn Lord, John DeSantis, Peter Shinkoda, Merritt Patterson and Chelsea Ricketts.

So what do you all think, a mere anomaly? Or is Dante back for good?
