Less than two months after Hugh Jackman declared the “planets are finally aligned” to make THE WOLVERINE, it would appear as though things have just come crashing down.
Darren Aronofsky has bowed out of the project. Apparently it has just dawned on the acclaimed BLACK SWAN helmer that making the tent-pole picture in Japan would be too much of a time-consumer. In a joint statement made with Fox, Aronofsky said the following: “As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, who have been totally supportive throughout my work on the movie, it became clear that the production of The Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year.”
“I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again,” Aronofsky continued.
Fox’s official Twitter page recently displayed this tweet: Unfortunately, Darren Aronofsky not able to direct The Wolverine. Onward.
This is especially interesting considering that this site claims that a casting call went out just last week for the picture. Click on that link to see the various supporting roles Fox is seeking to fill… Guess they need to fill the director’s chair now, too.
UPDATE: An article over at Cinema Blend states that the REAL reason Aronofsky left the film is due to the old “creative differences” song and dance. Aronofsky wanted total control, Fox wasn’t going to allow that. That’s what happens when a big studio and a head-strong indie director attempt to mingle. Read more HERE.
