David Cronenberg dives into Jonathan Lethem’s black hole

JoBloJoBlo

Director David Cronenberg paired with genre-bending novelist Jonathan Lethem seems like a match made in Heaven — a surreal, potentially gooey Heaven.

The “body horror” master has been associated with an adaptation of Lethem’s book AS SHE CLIMBED ACROSS THE TABLE for a while, but has been busy with COSMOPOLIS and A DANGEROUS METHOD (both of which start hitting festivals in the near future).

Now Media Rights Capital is pulling the trigger on the project, giving Cronenberg the go-ahead to do more sci-fi mindf*cking with the funky tale of romance, obsession and theoretical physics.

A brief bit about the story: “Philip is in love with Alice. As the novel opens, he is beginning to lose her. Not to another man, as he fears, but to, literally, nothing. Alice is a physicist, and a team at the University where both she and Philip work has created a hole, a vacuum, a doorway of nothingness inside the laboratory. They call it “Lack.” Alice becomes obsessed with Lack, as Philip is obsessed by Alice.”

Lethem’s books “Motherless Brooklyn”, “Gun, with Occasional Music” and “The Fortress of Solitude” are also all in some state of feature film development. (No “Amnesia Moon”? Whaaa?)
