Talk of a SUSPIRIA remake has been pretty much non-existent of late. Last time we heard about it was in the summer, when one of the producers of the potential project claimed it was going to shoot in 2011. Well, here we are in 2011, and still no sign of significant movement.
But it’s early yet, and according to director David Gordon Green (who is currently out promoting his latest comedy, YOUR HIGHNESS), SUSPIRIA is on the docket and could even be his next film.
In an interview with The Playlist, Green said: “I’m hopefully going to get into a horror film, [‘Suspiria’] next. That’s the goal.”
Green, who evidently co-wrote the SUSPIRIA script with his sound designer, also spoke about how close it will be to Dario Argento’s original: “It’s actually very faithful. I’m gonna put my spin on it, but in terms of a pitch, it’s going to remain quite faithful to [the original].”
In addition, Green mentions how he wants to cast unknowns in the lead roles, saying: “I don’t think it will have names, but hopefully it will be at a studio. Because I definitely enjoy having a movie that gets marketed that people go to see.”
Casting unknowns is really probably the way to go here, if only to avoid serious repercussions from the ballet doubles. In all seriousness though, I’m not quite sure a remake of this particular film can be pulled off without straying too far from what makes it so good. (The surreality of it all, the strange tangents it goes on, the goopy blood.) Plus, BLACK SWAN just gave us a freaky peek into the ballet world, so in a way SUSPIRIA will be fighting the specter of that movie in addition to the original.
