In light of the MPAA proclaiming that they’re going to come down harder on horror flicks than they have in the past comes the news that David Schwimmer’s TRUST, which has been attempting to appeal the group’s ruling that it’s an R-rated affair, has lost that battle. It will go out as Restricted. (It should be noted that it’s not a “horror” film in the traditional sense, but deals with horrific subject matter all the same.)
The flick’s rating is for “disturbing material involving the rape of a teen, language, sexual content and some violence.” The producers and Schwimmer have argued that the film, which is about a young girl who meets an online predator, is important viewing for teenagers, who might make the same mistakes – and face the same consequences – as the film’s young protagonist. That argument fell on deaf ears.
“Most of the time I don’t give a shit about what a movie gets rated,” producer Avi Lerner told Daily Variety. “But this particular movie has a message — a message to parents and children.”
Perhaps damning TRUST more than anything is the fact that it has six usages of the word “f*ck,” which violates the MPAA’s language policy. Only one f*ck per PG-13 movie – the overlords have deemed it so.
TRUST, which comes out on APRIL 1st, stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Noah Emmerich, Liana Liberato and Viola Davis. Check out the trailer below.
