The Toronto International Film Festival is currently right in the middle of its ten day run, and among the films that have landed a distribution deal during the event is "who ever asked for this?" horror offering DAY OF THE DEAD, the second remake of George A. Romero's 1985 zombie classic to be made in the last ten years.
The rights to the remake, which may or may not have the subtitle BLOODLINE, have been picked up by Saban Films, with the company planning to get the movie into theatres by the end of the year.
This take on the DAY OF THE DEAD concept has the following synopsis:
In a post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled society, a former med school student is tormented by a dark figure from her past. The only thing is, he’s a half-human, half-zombie hell-bent on destroying her world.
The remake has been directed by Hèctor Hernández Vicens. It stars Sophie Skelton (in a role that, according to the actress, nearly went to Ariana Grande), Lorina Kamburova, Marcus Vanco, Nick Loeb, Rachel O’Meara, Debbie Sherman, Luke Cousins, Nathan Cooper, and Cristina Serafini, with Johnathon Schaech as that half-human / half-zombie, a fellow named Max.
I can't muster up much enthusiasm for this one. A second remake, a "half-human, half-zombie", the tagline "Love means never having to say you're zombie"… Yeah, up to this point their choices have been so unappealing that they might as well have been actively trying to repel me from the film. We'll see if Saban's marketing department can make it seem promising.
Worst case scenario: I end up ignoring this remake's existance like I ignore the 2008 remake, while continuing to enjoy the original DAY OF THE DEAD.
