Day of the Dead series: Syfy announces premiere date with new poster

People have been cashing in on George A. Romero’s 1985 classic Day of the Dead (watch it HERE) for several years now. Beyond the original film, Romero didn’t have anything to do with the other movies that claimed to be connected to Day of the Dead: not the sequel, not either of the remakes, and he passed away before the Day of the Dead TV series that will be airing on Syfy came into being. Syfy has confirmed that the show will premiere on October 15th by putting the date on the poster that can be seen below.

Given that this is the latest in a line of people cashing in on Romero’s name and doesn’t appear to have much to do with the original Day of the Dead, it seems appropriate that the primary image on the poster is of a hand flipping the bird… but I do hope this show turns out to be entertaining and more worthy of its title than the sequel and remakes were.

Images for the series also dropped recently. Syfy has ordered 10 episodes of Day of the Dead, which was written by showrunners Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas and tells the story of

six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion. This ode to Romero’s famous flesh-eaters reminds us that sometimes all it takes to bring people together is a horde of hungry zombies trying to rip them apart.

Four of the episodes were directed by Steven Kostanski (Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman).

Here’s some character information:

Keenan Tracey is playing Cam McDermott, “a high school senior and son of a local police detective who spends his free time working odd jobs to get out of his small Pennsylvania hometown.”

Daniel Doheny’s character is Luke Bowman, “the son of town mayor, Paula Bowman.”

Natalie Malaika takes on the role of Lauren Howell, “a sarcastic assistant mortician at the local mortuary.”

Newcomer Morgan Holmstrom is Sarah Blackwood, “former Special Forces now working on a fracking crew outside of town. She discovers a mysterious body which plunges her into the middle of a zombie invasion.”

Kristy Dinsmore is playing Amy, “a life coach and daughter of the town doctor. When the dead start to rise, she begins a transformation as she fights for survival.”

Kostanski has said that the show does have some degree of connection to Romero’s film, but that’s not evident just yet.
