Death Holocaust now?

What’s this? Another f*cking “Holocaust” movie?! What’s the deal? Are horror filmmakers so into making certain that their flicks evoke the thought of hardcore carnage that they stoop to “borrowing” a piece of the title of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST? I think I’m rambling. Forget it. Anyways, I just reported yesterday on a movie titled PSYCHO HOLOCAUST and now I’ve just come across another one called DEATH STOP HOLOCAUST. Justin Russell, the flick’s writer/director, is describing it as a graphic throwback to the 1970s grindhouse movie. Hmm, let’s see if he’s on the verge of being correct.

Well, first off, I must say that the pics from the flick (above and below) do look awesome! I’m really digging those grimy f*cking masks (even if one is slightly reminiscent of SAW). The expression on that girl’s face as her throat is getting slit is pretty disturbing too. Alright, score one for DEATH STOP. But what about the plot? Let’s see:

The film is intended to be a gory and raw ride that takes place over a two-day period in the lives of two young women. While heading to a summer home for a vacation on a remote island, they happen upon a group of locals who torture and kill outsiders. As they desperately try to find help, it becomes more and more obvious that the entire island is in on the ruse and will stop at nothing to preserve their secret.

Hmm… a remote island, young vacationing women, torturing outsiders, everyone’s in on it. Sound familiar? Sadly, yes. So familiar that it would take me too long to list all the horror flicks those key words bring to mind. Nonetheless, I will hope for the best in that Mr. Russell can deliver the usual fare with a creative flare. Maybe he can start out by changing the title.

DEATH STOP HOLOCAUST (as it’s known for now) is currently on its way into postproduction and will aim for festival play before seeking out a distributor.
