Deep Blue Sea 3 in development at Netflix

I really enjoyed the shark thriller DEEP BLUE SEA when I caught it in the theatre back in 1999, and for a while afterward I was interested in seeing a sequel to it… But a direct-to-video sequel with a similar but sillier plot and no connection to its predecessor was not something I was very interested in when DEEP BLUE SEA 2 (pictured above) finally came along nineteen years later, so I still haven't gotten around to seeing that movie.

If you have seen DEEP BLUE SEA 2 and were left wanting more from this franchise about enhanced sharks, you'll be glad to hear that we won't have to wait nineteen years for the next sequel. Production Weekly is reporting that DEEP BLUE SEA 3 is already in the works.

The only information available on the new sequel at this point is that it's being produced by Netflix.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the original DEEP BLUE SEA told the following story:

Researchers on the undersea laboratory Aquatica have genetically altered the brains of captive sharks to develop a potential cure for Alzheimer’s disease. There is one unexpected side effect. The sharks are getting smarter. You can swim but you can’t hide when a tropical storm floods Aquatica, plunging Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J and the rest of the crew into a harrowing battle of wits against sleek killing – and thinking! – machines.

DEEP BLUE SEA 2 was directed by Darin Scott and has this for a synopsis:

A shark conservationist is hired to consult on a top-secret project on genetically enhanced sharks funded by a pharmaceutical billionaire. Soon after her arrival, the highly intelligent super sharks turn on their masters and begin to pick them off.

We'll keep you updated on DEEP BLUE SEA 3 as more information is revealed. In the meantime, copies of the previous two films can be found on Amazon.
