Despicable Me 3 writers, Robert Kirkman to adapt indie comic Birthright

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Earlier today, we'd learned that DMG will be taking ownership of Valiant Comics, with the intention of building a proper cinematic universe featuring the indie comic book label's library of over 2,000 characters. And now, we've received word that Skybound Entertainment, the multi-platform entertainment company founded by THE WALKING DEAD's Robert Kirkman and David Alpert, is teaming up with DESPICABLE ME 3 writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio to create an adaptation of the Birthright comic book series.

First published in 2014, BIRTHRIGHT is an on-going comic book series written by Joshua Williamson with art by Andrei Bressan. The Image Comics-published title centers on the fantastically terrible tale of the Rhodes family, who suffer a tragedy when their young son disappears while playing outside. A year later, a grown man who claims to be their long-lost son appears before them, with wild tales of another world on his tongue. After sharing the details of his journey, the stranger invites his family to return to the bizarre world from which he came, but little do they know that a fate worse than death is waiting for them on the other side.

For those of you who're keeping score at home, BIRTHRIGHT is poised to be the third feature project to come from Skybound's partnership with Universal. Previously, adaptations of Kirkman's INVINCIBLE, as well as Chris Pasetto and Christian Cantamessa's KILL THE MINOTAUR, have been optioned for big screen treatments.

Well it's about damn time! I've been waiting for this happen for the better part of the past two years. BIRTHRIGHT is a tremendously cool series, and I highly recommend that you give it a read. Over the past few years, Williamson has established himself as a talent-to-watch by writing the hell out of books like DC's THE FLASH, PREDATOR, DEAR DRACULA, and GHOSTED, also from Image Comics.

Be sure to keep an eye out for this one, as I know first hand that there are lots of interesting directions this project will be likley to embark upon.
