Directors chosen for a prequel to The Shining and a sequel to The Ring

It looks like a couple of horror film projects are beginning to gain some traction, as directors have been announced for both. First up is THE OVERLOOK HOTEL. For fans of the film/book, you already know that’s pertaining to THE SHINING. The film will evidently tell the origin story of the hotel during the era of its first owner, Bob T. Watson. Mark Romanek is being tapped to direct the piece. I can’t speak for the script, but Romanek’s films (NEVER LET ME GO, ONE HOUR PHOTO) excel with their pace and atmosphere. He’s certainly more than an adequate director. The script was written by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), with James Vanderbilt, (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and Brad Fischer and Laeta Kalogridis are producing.

Next up is another sequel to THE RING, to be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez. Gutierrez first made some waves with his directorial feature-film debut, BEFORE THE FALL. Aside from a third Ring film, he’s also attached to THE CROW reboot that’s been floating around for a while now. No word yet on production dates for either project, although THE OVERLOOK HOTEL sounds like it’s a little further along than The Ring 3: The Re-Ring-ening.
