Box Office: Disclosure Day is looking at a $40 million plus opening; Masters of the Universe has a steep fall

Earlier this week, we predicted that Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day was looking at about a $40 million opening. According to Deadline’s numbers, that’s pretty close to the $43–44 million it’s expected to take in this weekend. While not a giant opening by any means, it’s still a strong showing for an original, non-IP-based movie, continuing a trend where audiences are overwhelmingly favoring non-sequels after years of franchise fatigue.

As far as Spielberg’s records go, Disclosure Day will be his fourth-biggest opener ever — not adjusted for inflation. It opens behind Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which remains his biggest with $72.1 million, followed by War of the Worlds, which earned $64.8 million, and Jurassic Park, which grossed $50.8 million way back in 1993. Disclosure Day beats Ready Player One’s $41 million opening, although adjusted for inflation, the latter would be significantly bigger.

The CinemaScore rating is only a B, which is soft for Spielberg. Last weekend’s Masters of the Universe earned the same CinemaScore and is looking at a shocking 69% drop, with just $9.2 million. Ouch — what a disaster. As expected, Obsession leapfrogged Scary Movie to take the number-two spot. It’s set to make $21 million this weekend for a $190 million domestic total. It has now grossed more than Get Out and seems on track to potentially challenge The Sixth Sense’s $293 million domestic tally — again, not adjusted for inflation.

As expected, Scary Movie is front-loaded, with it likely to lose more than 70% of its audience, earning just $14.6 million this weekend. Still, an $84 million total is nothing to sneeze at. Backrooms will be right behind it with $12 million and a stunning $160 million total.

My pick of the week, The Furious, is looking at about $3 million on only 1,250 screens, which is a decent result. That said, this movie is so killer it deserves to be a blockbuster, so go see it!

We’ll be back tomorrow with the full box office roundup.
