When Disney acquired Fox, the company seized the opportunity to capitalize on having the Home Alone property with a remake called Home Sweet Home Alone. This remake also hinted that it takes place in the original Home Alone universe, with Buzz McCallister showing up and even dropping a reference to his brother, Kevin. That little bit was the closest we had come to a close-knit sequel to the first two beloved films.
ScreenRant is now reporting that Disney may be trying again. However, this time they may have the strength of Macaulay Culkin‘s participation, which reportedly has the studio “salivating” for a new film. According to The Town with Matthew Belloni, the host revealed,
I got a tip the other day that there was a very interesting sighting on the Disney lot. Macaulay Culkin was there and he’s talked about an idea for a new Home Alone and Disney is salivating. They have a good idea. I’ve talked to people who’ve heard it and it’s a really good idea for a Home Alone reboot with Macaulay Culkin.”
Last year, Culkin took A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin on tour, sitting down for Q&As after screenings of Home Alone. Culkin addressed to the audience that he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to doing a true sequel, but “It would have to be just right.” Culkin also revealed his pitch for the sequel, which would definitely put a spin on the formula. He explained,
I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”
Culkin also added how “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” and his character has to “get let back into son’s heart’ kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”
