Disney will turn an iconic Fantasia sequence into a live-action film

They just keep coming; at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if Disney had announced a live-action remake for every single one of their animated films by the end of the year. THR reports that the latest Disney film to undergo live-actionification will…not actually be a film at all, but rather the studio is developing a live-action film based upon The Night on Bald Mountain segment from its 1940 musical classic FANTASIA.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are on board to write the script for the adaptation and will also produce. If you're looking for examples of their work, the pair scripted last year's DRACULA UNTOLD and were joined by Cory Goodman for the upcoming Vin Diesel flick, THE LAST WITCH HUNTER. Sources say that the adaptation will be of a similar vein to what Disney did on MALEFICENT. It will be interesting to see how they plan on transforming the eleven minute segment into a feature, but I suppose it's been done with less in the past.

This isn't the first time that pieces of FANTASIA has been mined for live-action adaptations; the Nicolas Cage film THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE was inspired by the FANTASIA sequence by the same name. The FANTASIA live-action film will join the many other live-action Disney films which are in various stages of development, including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE JUNGLE BOOK, DUMBO, MULAN, PINOCCHIO, WINNIE THE POOH, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, and TINKERBELL. Phew.
