The weekend box office is one strange beast: it’s never predictable, will always keep you guessing, and is known to shock from time to time. Like this time, as DISTURBIA hit the number ONE spot this weekend in it’s second week of release, for the second time in a row!
Not that this weekend’s other releases were any real competition, but I just didin’t think DISTURBIA had that staying power that would keep it on top… again! With a budget just over $20M, this is one certifiable hit, already doubling that in it’s second week! Good job! Even for a PG-13 teeny-boppy genre effort… The other weekend’s releases were sprinkled throughout the top 10, but nothing to shake a stick at.
The hotel horror flick VACANCY didn’t do half bad in my book, as it’s an R rated horror show that really didn’t have a lot of advertising backing it up, and Luke Wilson in a non-comedic role. While it didn’t do GREAT, I wouldn’t say the flick bombed in the least… Speaking of box office bombs (but one of the better times at the theater this year), GRINDHOUSE dropped out of the top 10 in it’s 3rd week of release, down to number 14 on the charts, bringing in just under $1.5M… ouch! The only good thing about that: looks like it’ll be hitting DVD sooner than later!
