Drew Barrymore flexed her producing powers at the turn of the century when she adapted the popular 70s primetime series Charlie’s Angels into an action comedy starring her and Cameron Diaz. The movie became a blockbuster hit and spawned a sequel. Although Barrymore had recently situated herself on television as the host of her own daytime talk show, she recently revealed a desire to make another adaptation with Diaz.
According to IndieWire, when close friend Adam Sandler made an appearance as a guest on her show when she spoke about reuniting with Diaz for a remake of the John Hughes Thanksgiving classic, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. She revealed that she wants to play the Del Griffith role, played by John Candy. However, either Diaz or Sandler could be the Steve Martin character.
“Her and I did discuss remaking ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,’ and then I was like, ‘Well you know Adam and I talk about that. Well, I also want to play John Candy,” Barrymore told her Wedding Singer co-star. Sandler, ever the supportive friend, replied, “You could do a good Candy. You know who could do Candy the best? [Chris] Farley. He would walk around the office and say lines from ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.’”
Diaz had informally retired in 2014. However, she’s now slated to return in a film titled Back in Action, co-starring Jamie Foxx. Diaz spoke about her initial decision to step away, “Fame is very infantilizing. It’s very much about keeping somebody coddled in a state of like, we see a little child and think, ‘It’s so cute, I want it to always be cute, and if I keep it cute by always treating it cute, maybe it’ll stay cute forever.’ And that’s how people treat you.”
