DARK CITY: DIRECTOR’S CUT – July 29th
This is the day that fans everywhere have been waiting for: a pimped out deluxed director’s cut of the Keifer Sutherland / Jennifer Connelly pre-MATRIX vision of the world (before THE MATRIX made it hip, popular, and cool). Written and directed by Alex Proyas, there are circles out there who still consider this to be one of the best movies to hit the 1990s… and who am I to argue with them? I don’t agree, but argue? Me? Never. Hard to believe this beast came out a decade ago… about damn time the director’s cut is released! Stick around for them soon-to-be-announced special features… they’re coming… I swear!
The Goods:
VAN HELSING – July 8th
Since when does a so-bad-it’s-fun CGI extravaganza deserve the collector’s edition treatment? Seriously, who greenlit this release? I enjoyed the hell out of this in the theater, but have tried–on more than one occasion–to sit through this on the small screen and I just can’t do it–it’s that bad! Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale are awesome by themselves, but put them together… yeesh! Look out… but hey, at least there’s a few special features to keep even the bravest viewer entertained.
The Goods:
THE MUMMY COLLECTION – July 8th
So here’s my answer as to why VAN HELSING is getting a collector’s edition: it’s being release simultaneously with director Stephen Sommers other CGI adventure fests THE MUMMY and THE MUMMY RETURNS. Must have scored a sweet mass-DVD-release deal or something. While I’m not sure the discs are that much better than previously released special editions, if you don’t own them both already, it’s about damn time to have some fun and throw a few bucks down for the set. And just in time for THE MUMMY 3 in theaters… how convenient.

THE MUMMY – July 8th
If the special effect extravaganza of the late 90s early 00s MUMMY just doesn’t do it for you, no worries… Universal is also pimping out the original 1932 version starring Boris Karloff in all of its classic glory. While not as pimped as the Universal Legends series, this edition features some sweet extras that should be worth the price alone… though I’m a bit disappointed that it’s not in 5.1 audio… then again, it was made in the 30s, what can you expect, right? At the very least, this gives you the opportunity to watch a true classic in horror, with plenty of features to go around.
The Goods:
TRILOQUIST –July 1st – Because it’s from the director of LEPRECHAUN and it features a killer doll–it just screams AWESOME!
OMEN DOUBLE TAKE –June 10th – Because you needed reinforcement that the new OMEN sucked ass compared to the original. Well, compared to anything, really…
DRAINIAC – June 24th – Because we’ve all battled clogged drains… this just takes it one step further! And dig the cover, eh? Gotta love it!
