Dwayne Johnson teases a few surprises in store for Hobbs & Shaw sequel

Dwayne Johnson first appeared in the FAST & FURIOUS franchise in 2011's FAST FIVE, which means that Luke Hobbs has been a part of the Fast Family for close to a decade; Hobbs was also the first character to receive a spin-off film in the form of FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW, and Johnson revealed several weeks ago that a sequel was in development.

While speaking with fans via Instagram recently, Dwayne Johnson dropped a few small details on the HOBBS & SHAW sequel.

Chris Morgan, of course, will write again, Seven Bucks Productions will produce again. We created a lot of great characters, from Vanessa Kirby’s character to Idris Elba, and Eiza Gonzalez. And now in this next installment we have a few more surprises and great characters to create. Not characters that Hobbs can just kick the shit out of, because that’s boring, but characters I think that you guys are gonna fall in love with. Villains, anti-heroes, and heroes all across the board.

The first film found Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) taking on Brixton (Idris Elba), a cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist who gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever. HOBBS & SHAW wasn't quite the billion dollar success which the past two FAST & FURIOUS films were, but it did pull in $760.6 million worldwide, which definitely isn't small potatoes.

HOBBS & SHAW also laid a lot of groundwork for the sequel, as it featured more than a few post-credit sequences catching us up on Magdalene Shaw (Helen Mirren), Agent Locke (Ryan Reynolds), and others. Dwayne Johnson has previously said that these scenes were to "give you an idea of the new future team." Another thread left dangling was the identity of the director of Eteon, the terrorist organization pulling the Brixton's strings. Director David Leitch has said that they decided to leave the Eteon director as a nameless and faceless entity for the time being, teasing that "the mystery of what Eteon is and where it’s gonna go was left where it needed to be." There were rumours that Keanu Reeves would be playing the part, but it remains to be seen whether or not those rumours will come to fruition in the sequel.
