Dwayne Johnson says he’s working on a secret video game movie

It sounds like Dwayne Johnson is ready to bring another iconic video game character to the big screen. In a recent interview with Men’s Journal, Johnson revealed that he’s working on a secret video game project that could have ties to Microsoft and the Xbox.

Johnson spoke with the outlet about his upcoming superhero film Black Adam, which he says will be a game-changer for the genre. “Superheroes live by a code of ethics and a line of integrity. But with Black Adam, depending on how you look at him, he has the ability to be a hero, an antihero, and a villain,” Johnson said. “One of the things that drew me to Black Adam is his origin. He started out enslaved. Any time you have a character, or any human being, who has wrongfully been held down by others, it means so much more when they begin to rise up. Black Adam rises with a big fucking chip on his shoulder—and an edge. In the traditional DC Universe, as we all know, if you do something wrong Superman and Batman are gonna try and bring you to justice. If you do something wrong to Black Adam, you’re going to die. It’s that simple.”

Toward the end of the interview, Johnson is asked about his long-standing relationship with Microsoft and the Xbox gaming console. It was at this point that he revealed he was working on a secret video game movie, which is set to be revealed later this year.

“I’ve always been a big Madden fan. I can’t tell you which game, in particular, we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course, we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie.”

My immediate thought was that Johnson is teaming with Microsoft to bring something from the company’s recent acquisition of Activision/Blizzard to the silver screen. However, that deal is perhaps a bit too new – and a long way from being finalized – to fit the timeline. If I had to put money on which Microsoft property Johnson is getting involved with, it’s Microsoft Game Studio’s Gears of War. Not only would Johnson make for a great Marcus Fenix – the primary protagonist from the first three games in the Gears of War franchise – he could also play a brand-new character as well.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that Johnson would star in a top-tier video game adaptation. He starred in 2005’s Doom and 2018’s Rampage. Neither film set the world on fire, but both were highly enjoyable romps based on beloved video game franchises. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I thought Rampage was an awfully good movie, and I’d welcome a sequel with open arms. I know we’re not getting one anytime soon, but a man can dream, no?
