Got an early review of PROJECT GREENLIGHT 3 winner FEAST for ya. One of our loyal readers caught a screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, TX and wrote in with his two cents. If you were a fan of the show like me, then you have been eating up any news on the status of the project, and this is a positive review that certainly indicates the wait will be well worth while.
Plus I’ve slapped a hot pic of Krista Allen at the end of the story, so really, how can you go wrong here? Now on to the review:
I caught a screening Friday night of FEAST down here in Austin, Texas. You might know it as the movie from the third season of Project Greenlight. It was showing as part of a new annual festival called Fantastic Fest, which showcases sci-fi, horror, and fantasy films.
I’ve been eagerly waiting for this film since the season started earlier this year. So was it worth the wait? Absolutely! In a time of watered-down PG-13 bullshit passed as “horror,” Feast delivers the goods. You want your gore, you got it. You want your f-bombs and one-liners, you
got it. You want your hardcore heroes and hot chicks, you got it. Feast delivers in the way that only a balls-to-the-wall R-rated film can.
By now most people know the basic story: people locked in a bar are forced to fight monsters. I had some doubts whether they could play it out and keep it interesting for a whole movie – but it works. After a hilarious opening sequence identifying all the characters with title cards and some fun facts (Hero’s Life Expectancy: pretty fucking good), the story shifts into overdrive and never looks back. Nonstop thrills and laughs fill up the rest of the film as we see who’s going to survive the night to drive off into the sunrise and who’s monster chow.
I don’t want to spoil the details for anyone because I think one of the best things going for the
movie is that it plays with the conventions and tricks you into thinking that you’re going to see one thing, but then slaps you across the face with something unexpected. Suffice to say, gorehounds get their due. We’ve got blood spurts galore, chopped limbs, a face ripped off, and don’t even get me started on the “monster fornication” scene as well as
many more that I’ll leave for you to discover.
Other highlights for me included cool camera shots/angles (love that shot where the camera follows a shotgun that is knocked out of someone’s hands and skitters across the floor to the other end of the bar where it’s picked up and used accordingly), some great humor, and a gorgeous-looking ending outside the bar.
A few nitpicks: some lines of dialogue are eye-rolling but forgivable and much of the action and effects shots are sped up to a frenzied pace. It’s not so fast that you couldn’t tell what was going on, but I would have liked to see a few longer “normal speed” action shots for at least a change of pace.
Overall the film is a great success and everyone behind it should be proud of the fact that they delivered a real crowd-pleasing piece of entertainment. This film is a horror fan’s dream and I hope everyone else gets a chance to experience it because this is one hell of a fun ride that you don’t want to miss.
