Sonic the Hedgehog 2 speeds past Fantastic Beasts 3 at the Monday Easter box office

The Easter box office numbers are in, and it’s official, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has sped past Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore at the Easter Monday box office. After crunching the latest digits, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $4.5 million on Monday, beating The Secrets of Dumbledore‘s $3.68 million. According to Comscore, 41% of K-12 schools were out on break for a holiday and made up for most moviegoers on Monday.

Meanwhile, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has made $45.8 million in the United States. Then, the revised cumulative total for the Harry Potter prequel scored $150.7 million internationally. Despite being attached to one of the biggest franchises ever, The Secrets of Dumbledore is the weakest-performing film in the franchise so far. With box office returns looking grim by Harry Potter standards, it would not be a surprise if Warner Bros. makes The Secrets of Dumbledore the last film in the Fantastic Beasts series.

It’s worth noting that The Secrets of Dumbledore could still make up some of its losses with students being off of school for the remainder of the week. The amount of students on vacation ranges from district to district, but many will be looking to experience the newest films at their local theater.

Another film that performed well on Easter Monday was A24‘s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which earned an estimated $930,000, bringing its Week 4 total to $18.6 million. Analysts suspect that the twisty film starring Michelle Yeoh will continue to perform well throughout its theatrical run.
