Friends, I do believe we have a must-see horror on our hands. The flick is called THE ECHO GAME (nice title!) and it seems to be daring to concoct a captivating genre cocktail: the combination of a deep, thought-out storyline and a copious amount of gore and nakedness! Thus writer/director Brian Feeney may be on the verge of creating a fright flick that will cover every end of the spectrum! That takes some guts (both literally and figuratively) and I’m all for it! Take a look a the plot and see which word jumps out at you first:
A young lesbian couple must protect their daughter from a rogue scientist on a murderous rampage to steal the girl’s psychic powers for herself.
So what word stuck out? It was “scientist” wasn’t it? Uh, just kidding! We’ve got horror with lesbians here! That’s the “alluring” aspect of horror. But they’re a lesbian couple with a daughter—that’s the “deep” aspect. See what I’m talking about? Either way, the plot does sound very nice. Now, I’m going to let director Feeney sum up what my inane meanderings above are trying to get across:
“At its core, this is really a supernatural slasher film in the tradition of the Italian greats,” he says. “It’s a great horror romp with a strong emotional core, centered around this lesbian couple, but without making a big deal out of the lesbianism—a step we’re quite proud of. Although it does have plenty of gratuitous gore and nudity from some of the supporting characters. In this age of ’80s hyper-nostalgia, we’re doing something better than remaking an old ’80s movie; we’re taking that aesthetic and doing something fresh with it.”
Works for me! Though he isn’t playing it up, the fact that’s he’s even using the word lesbians is enough to get mine and most others’ attention. Alisha Seaton and Jeannie Bolet star as the happy female couple and Melissa Lee plays their daughter. You can check out one pic from the flick above and one below. ECHO is eyeing a 2009 release.
