Ed Helms and family are headed back to Wally World in the Vacation reboot

As the VACATION reboot/spin-off has been developing, questions have been arising on what the plot will consist of. Well, now we know where the road will take grown-up Rusty Griswold played by Ed Helms.

First, writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein set the record straight on which of the four Rusty’s Helms grew up to be, “I guess the first Rusty. Or his own Rusty. That’s the good answer for that.”

Then for the reveal from Daley:

“It’s another road trip back to Wally World,” Daley said. “He realized that his original trip to Wally World brought the family, the Griswold family, closer together and he kind of chose to forget about the horrible moments along the way and decides that what his family needs is some bonding time and wants to take them back on the road again. Safe to say the road to Wally World has not gotten any easier.”

As you all already know, the first VACATION film introduced us to the Griswolds, and Clark’s desire/obsession to take the family to fictional park, Wally World. Is it proper to pay homage so exactly? Should Rusty have planned his own trip elsewhere? But going back to Wally World was the plan the writers had all along:

“I think it was always part of our intention,” Goldstein said. “We felt like in continuing a franchise like this, there’s a certain amount of homage you have to pay to the original but we also wanted to make this very much its own movie that can stand on its own. So we chose our favorite elements from the original and then used that as a springboard. I think people have an affection for the whole Wally World component of the story.”

Let’s not get our wires crossed here though, there will be differences and Daley wants fans to know that Rusty will not simply imitate his father, “As opposed to going along with the same family structure as the first one with a brother and sister, now Rusty and his wife Debbie have two boys with their own very unique dynamic.”

Is going back to Wally World a good idea?
