Escape Room 2: Sony Pictures bumps up release by six months

Escape Room 2 will get to scare moviegoers much earlier than anticipated. Sony Pictures has decided to move up the release date by a full six months which means we will see the release of the film this summer.

Escape Room 2 will now hit screens on July 16, 2021. The film was originally slated for release in August of last year but was pulled from the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new release date that was set was January 7, 2022, which gave the indication that Sony was in no rush to release the film by merely dumping it randomly on the schedule. The fact that Sony has decided to bump the release date by six months shows that the studio has faith that the marketplace is rebounding from theater closures and the pandemic.

Some might wonder why Sony is putting so much care into when Escape Room 2 is released but the first film turned into a surprise hit when it was released in 2019. Escape Room ultimately grossed $155.7 million worldwide on a mere $9 million budget and after it brought in so much money, sequel plans were put into action right away. In the first film, six strangers are brought together by an intriguing invitation. At first, they think they are there for an immersive escape room but they quickly realize they are pawns in a gruesome game of life and death.

Plot details about the sequel are being kept under wraps but what we do know is that Adam Robitel is back to helm the latest installment and Taylor Russell and Logan Miller are the returning cast members. New additions to the cast include Indya Moore, Holland Roden, Isabelle Fuhrman, Carlito Olivero, Thomas Cocquerel, and James Frain.

Are YOU happy you'll get to see Escape Room 2 earlier than expected? The sequel hits screens on July 16, 2021.
