Eugene the Marine: Nick Nolte, Barbara Hershey star in psychological thriller

Three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte (who received those nominations for The Prince of Tides, Affliction, and Warrior) and fellow Oscar nominee Barbara Hershey (who received her nomination for The Portrait of a Lady) have signed on to star in the psychological thriller Eugene the Marine for director Hank Bedford.

Scripted by Bedford and Cesare Gagliardoni, Eugene the Marine will tell the story of

Gene, a widower and former Marine who finds his highly regimented life deteriorating after his son begins pressuring him to sell his longtime home. When a mysteriously familiar woman appears in his life, Gene starts to loosen up, until his nightmares and reality begin to blur.

Nolte is playing Gene, while Hershey takes on the role of Frances, that “mysteriously familiar woman”. The synopsis for the film on IMDb takes the story even further into thriller territory, saying that “a series of gruesome murders begin targeting the people around” Gene.

Deadline reports that Eugene the Marine is being produced by Stephen Vincent, with Matthew Shreder of Concourse Media serving as executive producer.

Eugene the Marine will be the second feature for Bedford, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2017 crime drama Dixieland, starring Chris Zylka, Riley Keough, and Faith Hill. I haven’t seen that one, but Eugene the Marine definitely already has my attention… and I’m especially intrigued if that talk about “a series of gruesome murders” is accurate.

Nolte is 81 now, but he’s clearly not letting age slow him down. In recent years he has had roles in Graves, Angel Has Fallen, The Mandalorian, and Paradise Lost, among other things, and now it looks like this movie is going to be giving him another good role to play.
