Ewan McGregor on why he’s so excited to return to the Star Wars franchise

Ewan McGregor Star Wars, Obi-Wan series

Although Ewan McGregor briefly reprised the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a voice cameo in both STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, it's been fifteen years since we last saw the actor as the Jedi Master in the flesh. That's all set to change with the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series in development for the Disney+ streaming service, and McGregor couldn't be more excited.

"I'm more excited about doing this one than I was doing the second and third one that we did before," McGregor said while speaking with Empire recently. "I'm just excited about working with Deborah Chow [director, who also directed episodes of The Mandalorian], and the storylines are going to be really good I think. I'm just excited to play him again. It's been long enough since I played him before." McGregor is also pumped to return to the franchise now that the Prequel Trilogy has grown to become more appreciated with its own set of passionate fans.

You know, our films weren't much liked when they came out, by my generation who loved the first ones. I think people of our generation wanted to feel the way they'd felt when they saw those first three movies when they were kids, and George [Lucas] wanted to take our ones in a different direction, he had a different idea. It was tricky at the time, I remember. But now, all these years later, I'm really aware of what our films meant to the generation they were made for, the children of that time. They really like them. I've met people who, they mean a lot to them, those films, more so than the original three, and I'm like, 'Are you kidding?'

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is also expected to make use of the ground-breaking video-wall technology used on The Mandalorian, which Ewan McGregor is excited about as it means that he won't be lost in a sea of green-screen, "which becomes very tedious for the actor." McGregor teased yesterday that production on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is slated to kick off next spring and that it will likely be a single standalone season, which is understandable when you consider his busy schedule.

Is everyone excited for Ewan McGregor's Star Wars return?
