Brief update on COLD IN JULY, the adaptation of Joe Lansdale’s novel that’s been knocking around since fall 2007. Attached to write and direct is Jim Mickle, director of the very admirable MULBERRY ST. and the upcoming vampire epic STAKE LAND. I got a chance to ask Jim about COLD IN JULY since we hadn’t heard much about it in quite a while.
“We’re still trying to raise cash,” Mickle told me. “I think we’ve got some guys in place and hopefully we’ll be able to make the connection with the money, and then we’ll get rolling. Next year.”
Mickle co-writer Nick Damici (who also stars in STAKE LAND) had similar – if even more optimistic – words. “We just kind of pulled the cash together. I don’t know how solid it is, so I don’t want to say names, but it’s looking pretty good. Hopefully by summer, we’ll be on that one.”
Asked if there’s possibly more STAKE LAND adventures down the line, Damici said: “I just want this one to be good enough. If that opportunity comes, we’re ready for it.” Damici then grinningly said he’s got “ideas”.
If you want more info on STAKE LAND, head on over HERE, where you can watch some behind the scenes vids from late summer. The film is about to wrap later this month, with Dark Sky in line to distribute it (theatrically) next year.
