EXCLUSIVE: Rutger Hauer compares Argento’s Dracula 3D to Stoker’s Dracula

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting and talking to the legendary Rutger Hauer yesterday; the man is in New York for a couple days doing the press rounds for HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN and he couldn’t have been more generous with his time. We spoke for almost 20 minutes, which of course covers a lot of ground, but at one point I had to bring up the fact that he’s recently been cast in Dario Argento’s DRACULA 3D. He’ll be playing Van Helsing, and I wondered what the status of the project was.

Speaking about Argento, Hauer said “I’m very curious to see what he wants me to do. I’m not afraid of this character, but I want to see where he wants me to take it.”

I wondered if he’s actually read the script, to which he responded: “Yeah, of course. It’s the same script – it’s like a remake of the Bram Stoker one. It’s 3D. And I’m just hoping that we can kind of tweak- the language is a little bit stuffy, now and then. And I think we can bring it down a little bit so it has a little bit more eternal value.”

I then asked if this movie would have a “classical” feel to it. Hauer said: “I don’t know, I think- I have a feeling yes, but it’s classical in 3D. I can imagine the 3D for this kind of film could be kind of… You know, scary all around, not just in front of you.”

That’s just a very small sample of my chat with Mr. Hauer, who is, as expected, a terrific person to talk to. You’ll be able to listen to the entire interview in a few weeks on the Arrow in the Head Podcast, when we get closer to HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN‘s release.
