F13th’s week 2 death

Jason, what have you done?! After opening last weekend, the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake bled the box office dry, raking in $42.3 million in just three days. That set a horror-movie opening record!

Today we have the results of Jason’s second weekend on the prowl and, what do you know, he set another record… though this latest achievement is actually even worse than the concept for FRIDAY THE 13TH Part VIII. Yup, it seems that poor Mr. Voorhees had a lot of trouble filling his “body count quotient” over the past three days, taking in just $7.8 million. For all you non-math-geeks, that’s a staggering 81% drop in sales, which, you guessed it, is a brand new record for a horror movie in its second week of release. In fact, FRIDAY failed to even crack the top 5, surrendering its first-place crown to a guy that likes dressing up like a fat old lady (I ain’t mentioning the flick’s name b/c it doesn’t belong anywhere near AITH)!

With these new monetary results, this Marcus Nispel-directed remake probably won’t even come close to the kind of bank that FREDDY VS JASON and the TEXAS CHAINSAW remake acquired. So far, FRIDAY’s total is $55 million.

Perhaps this less-than-stellar second weekend has stemmed from the greatly shared feelings that the first 20 minutes of the flick rocked and then kind of fizzled out from there. I still say I had a great time throughout, but from everyone I spoke to who’d seen it, the “first 20 minutes only issue” was the common flaw. Hopefully this will spark the filmmakers of the definitely-still-happening sequel to work things a tad differently… i.e.: a little more creativity and originality.
