Fallout has best Mission: Impossible preview night with $6 million total

If there’s one mission that won’t be impossible for Tom Cruise to accomplish this weekend it's coming out at number one at the box office. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, the sixth installment of the actor’s long-running franchise, is on track for a big opening weekend and the fuse has already been lit with a whopping $6 million from Thursday previews.

The tally may not compare to the likes of big comic book movies the summer has offered, but the Thursday total marks the biggest preview night yet for a MISSION movie, overcoming the $4 million total of MISSON: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION. That movie went on to make $55 million during its opening in 2015, which means FALLOUT has a great chance of topping it, and perhaps even besting the series' best opening, $57 million from MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II. Current projections from BoxOffice.com predict the movie will earn as much as $70 million for the weekend, destroying the franchise record.

Right now the movie is benefitting from incredibly strong reviews, with the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score currently holding at 98% with 191 reviews. This makes it not only the highest-rated MISSION movie but also one of the highest-rated action movies ever (on par with MAD MAX: FURY ROAD), as well as the highest-rated Tom Cruise movie ever (eat it, COCKTAIL!). The audience scores are also in from people who have already checked it out, with the percentage at an incredible 96%.

An understatement would be that things are going well for this latest MISSION movie. The first trailer dazzled viewers when it debuted during this year's Super Bowl, and anticipation hasn't wavered since. I caught the movie last night in IMAX and it's truly a stupendous piece of work. The action is beyond thrilling, the story is engaging and the cast has never been better in these movies. Director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise have created something special here, and the movie deserves to make all the money.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT is in theaters now.
