MOTHER’S DAY
I’ve never seen the original (I know shame on me) but this remake has me pumped. Its got a stellar cast (Jaimie King, Shawn Ashmore, AJ Cook and the glorious return of Rebecca De Mornay) and although I am personally tired of the “home invasion” type of horror flick, I am putting my money on director Darren Bousman to put me through the ringer and hopefully surprise me. The dude showed he had the sack to go beyond pushing the envelope in the past…he often burned it. So bring it!
PRIMAL
I don’t know much about Josh Reed’s creature goes amuck on a group of young adults opus and that is one of the main reasons I am thrilled to tap it. The initial premise screams standard slasher (which is okay in its own right, if its not broken, don’t fix it… too much) but my Arrow Sense is tingling on this one; telling me that I will get more than I expect…all good.
AGNOSIA
I really enjoyed Eugenio Mira’s first film THE BIRTHDAY; I didn’t even know he was working on a follow up until the trailer for this bad girl popped up. Nobody does visually arresting like the Spaniards do and the definition of “Agnotia” has me curious as to how this baby will handle the theme: a loss of ability to recognize objects, persons, sounds, shapes, or smells. Sounds like primo stuff for horror to me!
LET ME IN
Slap this one in the morbid curiosity folder. From what I heard, Matt Reeves (who created the excellent Cloverfield) USA remake of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is for the most a shot by shot retelling of the Swedish original. But being that I thought the original was slightly (I said slightly, put them torches away) overrated; maybe I’ll get more out of this dub. Lets see!
BURIED
Ryan Reynolds in a box, underground for a buck and a half? Interesting… I can’t wait to see how they went about it, making a movie mostly set in a casket with one dude going through the inner party that he goes through. To wing making that compelling throughout is a tall order and I hear the film delivers. Am ready to watch and learn!
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE REMAKE
The original I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is a favorite of mine; part exploitation flick, part feminist piece with hints of art film. Its a genre flick that gets its whore and eats her too that’s for sure. I initially didn’t give a rats ass about this remake, just because I’m sick of seeing the same films over and over again; but I hear its pretty damn good and that it manages to stand proudly on its own two blood dripping feet. Am game!
RED HILL
RED HILL’s plot line evokes an old school American Western for me; a young cop in a new town dealing with an escaped baddie. I love Westerns so this one is right up my trash filled alley. Moreover the TRAILER floored me and I hear that Ryan Kwanten kills the screen. I’m there!
SHARKTOPUS
Initially supposed to be directed by Roger Corman (too bad that didn’t happen) the utter silliness that Sharktopus promises via its title alone makes it a must see in my book (with a couple of beers in my belly of course) . Cheap gore, easy laughs and gratuitous TNA is what I’m expecting and I better freaking get it.
HATCHET 2
I adored the original HATCHET, a faitful slasher with a f*ckload of gore, TNA and giggles in its back-pack and I am expecting more of the same but pushed further via this sequel. The cast is bang on with Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Tom Holland, and R.A. Mihailoff doing the doo and its the first horror flick to be released unrated in theatres in a while; I got to respect and support that.
RED
Based on a comic book of the same name, I know that RED is not an obvious pick but I’m a big Bruce Willis fan and will see pretty much anything he does (yes even Cop Out). The trailer was amusing, promising action and chuckles, the cast is solid and I personally can’t wait to see Helen Mirren go buck nuts with an automatic rifle… good times!
