Feast’s John Gulager to helm Piranha 3D sequel, Saw scribes to write?

Right out of the 80s playbook, when theatrical horror sequels were churned out in a year’s time, the Weinstein’s are fervently fast-tracking a sequel to the underwhelming (box office) Alaxandre Aja flick PIRANHA 3D.

According to Deadline, FEAST director John Gulager will direct, from a script to be penned by SAW mainstays Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston (who also wrote FEAST). Talk about a f*cked up match made in hell!

Word is the sequel, tentatively titled PIRANHA 3 DD, will aim for a late August 2011 theatrical release. That comes as a bit of a shock considering the paltry business (3D business no less) Aja’s fish initially netted (it’s since gone on to gross more than $70 million internationally).

Of course, the shady post-converted 3D employed on Aja’s film drew much criticism, especially from Jimmy Cameron (who got fired from the first PIRANHA sequel), who lambasted the film for in effect mocking how far along he has personally brought the medium. My guess, Gulager deliberately does an even sh*ttier post-conversion job…

But how do you feel? Would you rather have seen Aja take the sequel, or does the reunion of FEAST writers and director make you feel all funny in the pants?

Slice a wrist…
