TAKES ON SITGES 2007

Part 1 of 3

The
2007 edition of THE SITGES FILM FESTIVAL (i.e. my favorite f*cking
Festival) has come and gone once again (this was my third year attending it) and
man was it a good time on so many levels. Movie wise, I don’t think I’ve ever
witnessed this many rock solid horror offerings on one golden platter.
The selection this year was outstanding and out of the 10 flicks I tackled, only two wound up being ho hum
(bummer that I missed on REC, THE ORPHANAGE and DIARY OF THE DEAD due to
arriving 3 days after the Festival had began).

Pumped to see some f*cking movies!

Now
some elements stood out as to the movies I saw this year at Sitges. For one this was the year of the one word title! STUCK, TEETH, WAZ, BUG,
INSIDE, MY ASS (oops that’s two words and its not a title); every time I’d list
what I had seen to people, they’d laugh their asses off cause they were all “one
words”. Castrations and peeps being set on fire
were common themes within the movies I wrangled as well. Maybe North America is tired of the torture
subgenre by this point; but let me tell ya; its still kicking hardcore foreign.
THE INSIDE for example had to be the goriest and meanest films I’ve ever seen.
F*ck me man! That flick kicked my ass to the ground and then crushed my skull
for good measure (yes review coming soon).

THE SITGES EXPERIENCE

Kaboom!

Horror
celebs

were in the house this year but not as much as last year. With that said, I ran
into Robert Englund, Mena Suvari, Edgar Wright, Ken Foree and Stuart Gordon while Rutger Hauer,
and George Romero were also around, but I missed them. At least that chick
that sold sandwiches downstairs was damn cute. She was a star to me and so were
her damn tasty sandwiches. Yum!

Mena Suvari (Stuck) taking care of her assets for…

…this sweet picture…ahhhhhh…so pretty….

On a personal level; well it was groovy to hang with the Sitges gang again. As per
usual I was well well treated by all, the parties were fly (too fly actually) and it was swell to
see old friends while making new ones. I did find it harder than usual to balance partying, seeing
films, reviewing films and PRing this year (I guess I’m getting old)…but I think I did an okay job at it
considering. Now that I think of it, doing Sitges is akin to hopping on a freight train. You
jump on,
it unravels fast and all you can do is hold on, hope to not crash.

The great men who in my book made the Festival what it is:
Angel Sala and Mike Hostench!

The boys of Sitges: Mike Hostench, director Todd Morris,
actor Deke Richards and an asshole!

As per every year I tap Sitges, there’s always something odd that
happens to me. This year took the cake and squished it on my head. While walking
to my Hotel from a party, drunk, on a pitch black beach (at like 5AM) some dude decided to try to mug me
(he tackled me from behind…must have been my cologne); I thankfully managed to turn the guy over and
punch his fucking head in; until he stopped moving. Intoxication made sure I
didn’t feel anything at the time but man I felt it the next day!

Day after that attempted mugging…fucker…

The good news is, I got away
from that dude (with my belongings intact, except for a credit card that fell
out my wallet…but that’s
another/weirder story), bad
news is I split my knuckles real bad on that bitch’s teeth (AIDS test here I come!) and bled
like a stuck pig all over my new shirt
and pants. Grrrr. The next day, I was told two things by the Sitges organizers:
It seems that there is one mugging every 10 years in Sitges
so I was unlucky. And: Of all the people, he could’ve mugged… he
tried to mug you!
That last one made me laugh. Only to me this shit
happens, only to me.
