Fincher, James Cameron and Zack Snyder have all agreed to direct segments in the film, which is now set up as a 3D animated film. Fincher and his reps are currently shopping the revised project to the studios and hoping to get production underway soon.
This new version of HEAVY METAL isn’t expected to hew very closely to the original 1981 film except that it will contain the same erotic and violent flourishes. While I was never a huge fan of the original or its predecessing comic series, now seems like a perfect time to get a HEAVY METAL film off the ground. You’ve the talent locked in and the technology isn’t nearly as expensive as it was a few years ago when Fincher had this project set up at Paramount. Whether a new studio will bite remains to be seen but I wouldn’t be surprised if Fincher’s home studio, Paramount, takes another good hard look.
